Written Statement for Abandonment Plan - Plan of Triangulation Layout & Underground Surveys - Co-ordinates of Surface Triangulation Stations - Co-ordinates of Underground Survey Stations

All survey records were submitted to HM Inspector of Mines in 1966; they were all subsequently destroyed with the exception of the Abandonment Plan.    Copies of some records were, however, retained and these are posted here for the purposes of preservation.  Anyone wishing to view the Abandonment Plan will now find it at the Northamptonshire Record Office under the ref. ZB1111/10.

Copy of written statement in support of Abandonment Plan submitted to H.M. Inspector of Mines 1 December 1966.
RICHARD THOMAS & BALDWINS LIMITED
IRON ORE MINE IRTHLINGBOROUGH, NORTHANTS
Surveyor’s Report on the accuracy of completeness of the Abandonment Plan of the Irthlingborough Mine in the Ironstone Seam of the Northampton Sands.
1. Surveyor making the report
A. J. PACK, Mining Surveyor’s Certificate No. 3674 dated 5th March, 1957.    Appointed under Mines and Quarries Act 1954 (S. I. 1956 no. 1760 Section 2).   Surveyor for the Mine from 1st June, 1960 having taken an active part in survey work at the Mine since 1953.
2. Previous Abandonment
Nil
3. Present Abandonment
Working of the ironstone seam ceased on 30th September, 1965 and the Mine was progressively abandoned thereafter.
4. Accuracy
(a) Theodolite Surveys
The underground workings were orientated to and correlated with Ordnance Survey National Grid by a triangulation and correlation survey carried out during 1954 and 1955.
A trigonometrical base, established between adjacent 2nd and 3rd order Ordnance Survey Trig. Stations was used, for calculation of co-ordinates and a verification base which was measured in the triangulation checked to within 1 in 20,000.
The triangulation was further extended in 1956 to provide a control from which the position of Estate and Highway boundaries in the proximity of underground workings were established by traverse surveys.
Correlation of the Mine was affected by the closed traverse through the Finedon adit connecting to existing survey stations underground.    The closing error of the survey was 1 in 65,000 and the total angular correction was 17 secs of arc.   Checks on the correlation were achieved by surveying to Shaft V. 3 and Borehole R17 and R15 with the following results:-
Point of Reference Difference between Underground Representative
Surface and traversed Fraction
Underground distance from
co-ordinates (metres) Finedon adit
(metres)
Shaft V.3 0.154 2202 1 in 15,000
Borehole R17 0.142 1857 1 in 13,000
Borehole R15 0.320 3550 1 in 11,000
All underground traverses made since 1939 were recompiled and recomputed after the Mine had ceased production and adjustments of closing errors were made by Crandall’s method.
4 (a) The local scale factor correction applied to all traverse measurements includes an extra correction to allow for a constant error in scale which was found to occur between the surface and underground co-ordinates of eight borehole connections in various parts of the Mine.
(b) Levels
Levelling surveys of the underground workings via the Irthlingborough adit had previously been made and numerous bench marks established underground. Good checks were established at two points in the Mine in 1948 and 1955 as follows :-
Point of Reference Difference in Level in feet
(Surface - underground)
Borehole R15 -.03
Shaft V.3 +.03
(c ) Construction of Plan
The abandonment plan shows the extent of the workings related to the Ordnance Survey National Grid as at 30th September, 1965 after which no working of the ironstone seam has taken place in the Mine.
The plan was constructed by hand tracing direct from the 1/2500 scale master plan and was commenced in 1958 and completed in November, 1966.
General
5. Inaccessible Workings
Where possible the main drivages in areas of the Mine worked prior to 1939 have been resurveyed since 1956.
Any inaccessible workings, the position of which are in any doubt, after having examined all available records, have been shown on the plan in their most likely position and bounded by a blue line and hatched blue.
It is not considered that those workings would extend beyond the areas so marked.
6. Pumps
The position of all pumps below ground prior to abandonment have been marked on the plan together with amounts of water being pumped in gallons per annum X 106 .
All pumps have been removed as abandonment proceeded.
7. Water Dams
No special water dams have been constructed underground and stowages under the main highways have been constructed as to allow as far as possible the free passage of water by the inclusion of pipes at various point throughout the cross section of each heading.
8. Water Logging
There were no extensive water-logged areas in the Mine immediately prior to cessation of working but it should be noted that with the passing of time large areas will become progressively water-logged.
9. Levels on boundaries of workings
Levels on the boundaries of old working have been ommitted from the plan where the accuracy of available records are in doubt and where access had been impossible for many years.
10. Depth of Working
All underground workings in the Mine are within 150 feet of the surface.
11. Surface contours
Contours in red on the plan indicate the level of the surface before subsidence had taken place.
General subsidence of the surface has occured over areas where the ironstone pillars have been extracted but no movement of the surface has yet been observed where the ironstone seam has been left in pillar and stall formation.
12. Section of overlying Strata
The section as Shaft V.3 shown on the plan is representative of the whole area and any variation in the depth of overburden in other parts of the Mine are for the most part generally taken up by a similar variation in the thickness of the overlying glacial drift deposit.

National Grid Co-ordinates of Surface Triangulation Stations
Surface triangulations were made during November 1954 and March 1955 in stage I, March 1956 in stage II and March 1957 in stage III.    The instrument used, for both surface and underground surveys, was a Troughton & Simms transit theodolite (Fig. 1) with verniers reading to 10 seconds of arc.   Obsevations for the triangulation were made by reiteration and the figures (crossed quadrilaterals and polygons) were corrected using the 'least squares' adjustment.   The underground surveys were re-computed in 1966 by the N.C.B. Computer Centre at Cannock and the closed traverses were also corrected using the 'least squares' adjustment.   Reductions for local scale factor and mean sea level were applied.
